February 27 is considered as World NGO Day.

What are NGOs?

NGOs are Non-Governmental Organizations generally working for the betterment of the society and the world without expecting any kind of financial aid from Government/Trust or people. In simple words, they are non-profit organization/trust or a group of voluntary people working with a similar interest for the betterment of the society and the world.

Save the Children, Amnesty International, Oxfam International, Doctors Without Borders, CARE International, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Greenpeace etc. are examples of few well known NGOs.

Bachpan Bachao Andolan, an NGO founded by the Nobel Prize Winner Mr. Kailash Satyarthi is well known for its work against child labour in India.

Global Hunger Index

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is published annually as part of a partnership between Concern Worldwide, Ireland's largest aid and humanitarian agency that says it is " dedicated to tackling poverty and suffering in the world's poorest countries", and Welthungerhilfe, which describes itself as " one of the largest private aid organisation in Germany, independent of politics and religion".

The publishers say that the first GHI report was published in 2006 and that it is intended to be " a tool designed to comprehensively measure and track hungar at global, regional and national levels".

As per publishers the GHI assesses a country's performance on four component indicators, which reflect the multidimensional nature of hunger- undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting, and child mortality- to compile a score that gives an indication as to deficiencies in calories as well as in micronutrients.

A three-step process based on standardization of scores on each of the indicators and their aggregation yields a country's GHI score on a 100-point 'GHI Severity Scale', where 0 is the best score and 100 is the worst.

Plastic: A versatile Material with Environmental Concerns

What is Plastic? Plastic is a synthetic or semi-synthetic material made up of organic polymers of high molecular mass. It is known for its versatility, durability, and low cost, making it a ubiquitous material in modern life. Invention of Plastic The invention of plastic is a bit of a complex story with multiple key figures: Alexander Parkes: In 1862, Parks created Parkesine , considered  the first man-made plastic. It was derived from organic cellulose and could be molded into various shapes. John Wesley Hyatt: In   1868, Hyatt developed Celluloid , a modification of Parkesine. Celluloid became popular for its use in photographic film and as a substitute for ivory.. Leo Baekeland: In 1907, Baekeland invented Bakelite , the first fully synthetic plastic. It was made from combining phenol and formaldehyde and was highly heat resistant and moldable. Bakelite revolutionized the plastic industry. So, while Parkes is often credited with the first man-made plastic, Bakeland'...
